5. Design your website.

6. Start creating content.

Reason Why You Should Start A Blog

There are several reasons to consider when starting a blog. Personally, I started blogging because I wanted to make money on my schedule because I hate the amount of money I’m earning from my per time job.

My blog has allowed me too:

  • Quit my per time job.
  • Support my family.
  • Buy a car.
  • Rent an apartment comfortably.
  • Pay off debts.
  • Network with companies and people all over the world.

While starting a blog has literarily changed my life, here are common reasons why other people start a blog.

You can make money from anywhere in the world – This is by far one of the best reasons why you should consider starting a blog. Any payments that are to be made to you will be paid online based on the financial service you use. I use PayPal, Payoneer and Paystack to receive my payments.

You can work from anywhere in the world – All you need is a computer and an internet to be able to blog from anywhere in the world. After setting up your blog, it is stored on a server and can be accessed through the internet from anywhere you are in the world.

You make money on autopilot – Depending on how you have set up your blog to generate income, either through displaying ads, affiliate marketing or sponsored post, you will generate more revenue with a consistent audience visiting your blog.

It is great for your resume – Employers will be very impressed when they see that you were able to start a successful business (yes, your blog is your business) all on your own especially if you are young. An employer will see a glimpse of what you are capable of accomplishing and how you can help his or her business more successful.

You are the boss – Yes, you are the boss, period! Blogging full-time in my own experience makes me not subjected to anyone. I create the rules and change it anytime I feel like it. I wake up anytime I want and blog anytime I want. You get the idea. Being a full-time blogger gives you more time for yourself, friends and family.

How To Set Up Your Blog

1. Pick A Host

You need to pick a host to get your website live and viewable to the public.

There are many hosting companies (GoDaddy, HostGator, Bluehost, MiFihost) in the market but I recommend only Cloudways.

I’ve also created a blog post on how to setup a website on Bluehost, HostGator, Mifihost and Godaddy.

CLOUDWAY HOSTING

These are my reasons:

  • Cloudways is affordable with no hidden extra renewal charges.
  • Cloudways gives you the option to pay monthly or hourly.
  • Cloudways is the fastest hosting in the world currently.
  • Cloudways offers Up and downgrading servers by demand.
  • Cloudways cheapest package is enough for a WordPress site with 50,000 visitors per month.

I have tried both Siteground and Bluehost and my experience with both is nothing compare with Cloudways.

Bluehost and Siteground hosting offer a very low price at first but after a year, the prices will increase more than 400% forcing you to try out other hosting (I’ve been there). interestingly enough, both their services is not as good as Cloudways.

7. Choose a plan. (The most popular plan is Digital ocean but I personally use the Vultr – High Frequency plan which cost a little more because it’s faster and capable of handling more load). I recommend starting with the lowest price and then upgrade later when required.

Reduce your server size to 1gb to get the lowest price available.

8. Click on Launch Now.

9. Click on upgrade my account located above. Upgrade before your trial expires to claim a free migration.

10. Enter your card details and authorize the transaction.

2. Pick A Blog Name/Domain

Congratulation if your domain is available, the next step is to buy it now. You can buy your domain from GoDaddy or Namecheap. They are both great. But for the purpose of this guide, I’ll use Namecheap.

NAMECHEAP

Think of a domain (blog name) for your website. Your domain name is what anyone can type into a search bar in a browser to get to your website.

For example,

This website domain name is Aidthestudent.com

for this tutorial we will be using Aidthestudent.com for our setup.

Here are some tips when choosing your domain name:

  • Your domain has to be unique (you can’t use a domain someone is already using)
  • It should be short and easy to remember
  • Don’t overthink it
  • Always use a .com

Now, if you have come up with a domain name, here’s how you can purchase it:

1. Visit Namecheap.

2. Type in your desired domain name without adding .com and click on search (remember you can’t use a domain someone has already used)

3. If your domain is available, you will automatically see a .com at the end of it like the image below. If it doesn’t show a .com at the end of it, it means someone is already using that particular domain and you need to search for a new one.

4. Click on add to cart once you confirm your domain is available.

7. Create an account and click on continue.

8. Setup the information required and make the payment.

3. Setup WordPress

It’s time to setup your website. follow my lead:

1. Log in to Cloudways

2. Make sure you are in the server section.

3. Click on www and the select your application. in my case, WordPress is my application.

4. Under the admin panel section, launch your URL to login to WordPress dashboard.

5. Your login details are under admin panel section. (Tip – click to copy).

6. Login to your WordPress dashboard.

Your WordPress dashboard is the control panel for your entire WordPress website. It’s where you create and manage your content, change styling with your desired theme and much more.

4. Point Your Domain From Namecheap To Cloudways

Remember I mentioned your domain is the name of your website. Now, we want to make sure anytime someone searches for your domain in a web browser, it automatically opens your website.

This is what you need to do, just follow these steps:

1. Check IP address of your hosting

2. Go to Namecheap

Hover on Sign in > Fill your Username and Password > Sign in

3. Click on Domain List

4. Click on MANAGE

5. At NAMESERVERS, choose Namecheap BasicDNS

6. Click on Advanced DNS

7. Click on ADD NEW RECORD

  • Type: A Record
  • Host: @
  • Value: IP address of your Hosting, ex: 45.252.248.18
  • TTL: Automatic

  • Type: CNAME Record
  • Host: www
  • Value: your domain name, ex: example.com
  • TTL: Leave default
